The UMCG is a leading Dutch institute for medical research. The UMCG Department of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry is specialised in top-level clinical care and research in neurobehavioural disorders, with a focus on ADHD, ODD, CD and Autism Spectrum Disorders. The research is embedded in an interdisciplinary research institute, the Graduate School of Behavioural and Cognitive Neurosciences. The Child and Adolescent Psychiatry clinical service has access to over 2000 new child and adolescent patients per year and has a dedicated ADHD and externalising behaviour clinic.
The Department of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry of the UMCG has been involved in a number of collaborative studies including investigator-initiated medication trials in children with behavioural problems, studies investigating the effectiveness of parent management training for children with behaviour problems, coordinates a large longitudinal study of pre-adolescents into adulthood involving both a population and clinical cohort, TRacking Adolescents’ Individual Lives Survey, is one of the three participants in the Dutch multicentre longitudinal study NeuroIMAGE, involving neuroimaging and genetics of children with ADHD, and finally is the European coordinator of an NIMH sponsored collaborative R01 project on the genetics of Tourette syndrome (TIC Genetics). The former Head of the Groningen Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Centre (Ruud B. Minderaa) has been initiator and coordinator of the national Knowledge Centre for Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, started as a network of all Dutch academic centres and a number of regional centres, which has now extended to most European countries, offering excellent opportunities for knowledge dissemination across Europe.
